Principal & Founder
Certified Professional Landman (CPL)
A Century of Heritage. A Career of High-Precision Results.
Matt brings more than a quarter-century of energy leadership to his role as Principal and Founder of MAG Energy Advisors. His expertise is rooted in over a century of family service—from his great-grandfather's induction into the Petroleum Hall of Fame to the fifty-plus year careers of both his father and grandfather. Today, Matt carries this legacy forward by blending deep institutional knowledge with executive strategy to deliver exceptional value to his clients.
Matt's foundation in energy began at the University of Oklahoma, where he served as President of the PLM Club before graduating in 2000 with a degree in Petroleum Land Management. This early leadership set the stage for a career dedicated to the highest standards of the field; he joined the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL) in 1999 and earned his Certified Professional Landman (CPL) designation in 2007. Matt's influence extends into the heart of industry governance, having served a five-year term on the AAPL Board of Directors, as Chair of the Public Lands and Access Committee, and as a member of the Legislative/Regulatory Committee.
Matt's career is defined by his 23-year tenure at Peak Energy. As Vice President of Land, he built the department's infrastructure from the ground up and oversaw the acquisition of over 140,000 net acres, multiple asset divestitures, and four successful company-wide exits totaling over $1B. His strategic execution in negotiating hundreds of high-stakes transactions—including complex farmouts, acquisitions, and divestitures—consistently delivered significant stakeholder value through a high-precision approach to asset preparation and exit strategy.
Crucial to this success was Matt's extensive experience navigating the most intricate federal, state, and Tribal regulatory landscapes. He has worked directly with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) offices in Wyoming and North Dakota, the Wyoming Oil & Gas Conservation Commission, and the North Dakota Industrial Commission. Furthermore, Matt possesses specialized expertise in Tribal relations, having collaborated closely with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), Fort Berthold Agency, and the Three Affiliated Tribes in North Dakota to manage complex acreage positions with unmatched precision and regulatory integrity.
A long-time resident of Durango, Colorado, Matt and his wife, Leah, have raised their three sons in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. His connection to the region is personal and active; outside of his professional life, he is an avid skier, mountain biker, and golfer who values the outdoors and the environment in which he lives.
Matt's commitment to stewardship is deeply rooted in his faith and community service. He is an active member of First Baptist Durango and serves on the board of Cross Bar X Youth Ranch, a Christ-centered camp dedicated to serving socially and economically disadvantaged youth. He integrates this deep sense of community responsibility with his professional practice, providing clients with a partnership defined by unmatched integrity and a clear sense of purpose.
